A recessionista is someone who still looks fashionable when the economy is bad and money is tight, without spending much. The word is playful magazine-and-newspaper English, not classroom English: writers like it because it sounds clever. It became popular around the 2008 crash, when shops were quiet and ‘cheap but stylish’ stories sold well. It copies fashionista (a person who lives for fashion) and puts recession in front — a hard-times fashionista. Though actually, almost nobody says this in ordinary talk. People just say they dress well on a budget, hunt for sales, or remake old clothes. If you use recessionista, you are usually quoting that media joke, not naming a job or a serious economics idea.
