A receptor is a tiny part of the body that receives a signal from outside — light, heat, pressure, a smell, a chemical — and helps the body react. The sense you meet first in school is often a nerve ending: the receptors in your skin that feel heat, or in your eye that catch light. Though actually, the word use all the time later on is a bit different: a receptor can also be a protein on a cell that a hormone or a drug fits into, like a key in a lock. Same picture — something that receives a message — but one is a nerve ending and one is a molecule. It is not a radio or a TV receiver, and it is not a (a box or bin).
