Recce (said like “RECK-ee”) is a short, informal word for reconnaissance: going to look at a place in advance so you know what is there — the land, the roads, the danger, the light. It started as military and police talk, especially British: soldiers go on a recce before a mission. Film and TV people in Britain also do a recce of a location before they shoot. You can go on a recce (noun) or recce a place (verb). Americans more often say for the same short form. It is casual, in-group speech; you would not write recce in a formal report unless you know your reader. Though actually, it is not a different word from reconnaissance — it is reconnaissance with the middle thrown away.
