Reconnaissance is the military work of finding things out about the other side: sending soldiers, planes, or drones to see where they are, how many they are, and what the land is like. The point is looking, not fighting. The everyday short form is . Outside the army, people sometimes use the long word with a small smile — a reconnaissance of the buffet — for any careful look before you decide. The full word is formal; is the one you hear. It is about gathering information, not attacking.

組成Borrowed from French reconnaissance (“recognition”). English also has recognizance, a legal twin from the same French word, but that one is a promise to a court, not scouting.
