Recon is the short, informal word for reconnaissance: going out to look, so you know what is there before you act. In the army, a recon team is sent to see where the other side is, not to start a fight. In everyday American English, people also “do a recon” of a restaurant, a street, or a shop — a quick look-around. You can use it as a verb too: to recon a place is to check it out. It is soldiers’ talk and casual talk. You would not put recon in a formal letter unless you were quoting that casual voice.
