A rebuttal is the argument you give to show that something said against you is wrong. It is the thing itself, not the act — the reply, the counter-argument, the piece of writing or speech that answers a charge. 'His rebuttal was three pages long.' 'She offered a detailed rebuttal.' You meet it most in three places. In law: the prosecution presents its case, the defence gives its rebuttal. In debate — school and university debating especially — 'the rebuttal' is a named part of the event, the section where you answer the other team. And in academic and life: a researcher publishes a rebuttal to a paper, a company issues a rebuttal to a news story. The common verbs around it are 'offer', 'issue', 'publish', 'present', and 'write' a rebuttal. The word is formal — a friend arguing with you at dinner does not deliver a rebuttal, they just disagree. If you use it about everyday conversation, it sounds either joking or a bit self-important, which some speakers do on purpose.

組成rebut + -al, the ending that turns a verb into the noun for its result or its act — the same -al you see in 'arrival', 'refusal', 'denial'. And 'rebut' itself is re- (back) plus an old 'butt' meaning to push with the head.
