verb · B2
To move something a small amount so that it sits in the right position in relation to something else.
Picture a row of things that are supposed to meet one straight line, and one of them sitting slightly off it. You nudge it back until the line runs clean again. That is realign, and the picture stays the same however large the row gets: photo edges on a shelf, wheels under a bike, columns on a page, departments in a company, people standing on one side of an argument. What never changes is that something has a line to meet, and it is being brought back to it.
Wiktionary gives realign as re- + align, with re- reaching English through Old French from Latin re-. The core image is the word taken apart: line it up again.
