A rationalist is a person who tries to live by rationalism: they want reasons and evidence to lead their choices, not a rush of feeling or a rule from religion. Someone may say "I am a rationalist" with pride. Someone else may use the word with a little sting, as if that person has no space for love, art, or faith. The -ist ending points to the person; the - ending points to the belief. Though actually, calling someone a rationalist is stronger than calling them rational. Rational only says they are being reasonable right now; rationalist names a type of person, or at least a type they claim to be.
組成From Middle French rationaliste; in English it is rational + -ist (a person who follows that belief).
