Ragga is a form of popular music from the West Indies, close to and dancehall: electronic beats, a DJ or singer toasting (talking and chanting) over the rhythm, often in Jamaican English. The name was from raggamuffin and pulled toward , which is why it sounds like both. In the 1980s and 1990s it was a big club sound; people still use ragga for that digital, dancehall-leaning feel. It is not the same as older, slower , though they sit in the same family of sounds. In everyday English it is a music-fans' word; you would not use it for a dirty child — that is ragamuffin.
