Reggae is a kind of popular music that started in Jamaica. You can often feel it in the beat: the guitar or keyboard hits on the off-beat, the pace is , and the bass is strong and round. It grew in the 1960s out of earlier Jamaican styles, and it became famous around the world in the 1970s — Bob Marley is usually the first name students meet. The sound can feel relaxed on the surface, but the songs often talk about hardship, faith, and fairness, so it is not only holiday music, even though tourist ads sometimes sell it that way. People now use reggae both for the classic Jamaican sound and, a bit loosely, for later cousins. Informal, and known worldwide.
組成From Jamaican Creole rege, “rags” or “a quarrel,” related to rag; in the 1960s it named a Jamaican dance. The 1968 Maytals song “Do the Reggay” spread the wider music sense.
