A ragamuffin is a dirty young child in torn clothes — a kid in rags. Older English used it a lot. It can sound almost fond, as if you are smiling at the messy child rather than being cruel. Today it is a little old-fashioned for a real child; you are more likely to meet it in stories, or as a , slightly cute word for someone (even a grown-up) who looks . The same family of sounds later gave music the word raggamuffin / , and there is even a cat breed with this name — but this entry is the child in torn clothes.

組成From Middle English Ragamuffyn. The true origin is not certain. One old explanation: a muffin here meant a poor, feeble creature, so a ragamuffin was a sorry creature in rags.
