Near the end of a cup or a tournament, the last eight players or teams play four matches. Those four matches are the -finals. The four winners go on to the two semi-finals, and those winners meet in the final. People also write quarterfinal or final. quarter-final 是盃賽或錦標賽接近尾聲時的一輪。剩下八位選手或八支隊伍，要比四場，這四場就叫 quarter-finals。四個勝者會進入兩場準決賽，準決賽的勝者再進決賽。
在體育新聞裡它很平常，寫法可以是 quarter-final、quarterfinal 或 quarter final。這裡的 quarter 指的是賽程的形狀：四場比賽，離準決賽只差一步。
