An area of soft wet muddy ground that your feet sink into, so that walking across it is slow and hard and you can lose a boot in it.

One way to hold this word: ground that looks like ground until you put your weight on it. Then it gives way, closes around your foot and holds. The trouble is not that it is dirty — it is that it takes hold, and pulling hard is exactly what sinks you deeper. Recorded from 1579, from quag plus mire; possibly a variant of the earlier quakemire, from quake plus mire — ground that shakes under you. The figurative use is recorded from 1775.
