A bog is an area of very wet, soft ground - so soft that your foot can sink into it. It's a kind of , similar to a swamp, but usually found in cooler, northern places, and often full of dead plants that have turned into a soft brown material called peat. There's also a very casual British meaning: 'the bog' can mean the toilet. That second meaning is informal and mostly used in the UK - a student probably won't need it, but it's good to know so you're not confused if you hear it.
