    A quadrilateral is a flat shape with four straight sides. A square is one. A is one. A diamond shape is one. The four sides do not have to be the same length, and the corners do not have to be square — four straight sides is enough. It is a maths-class word. You can also use it as an adjective: “a quadrilateral shape.” In the news, a meeting of four countries is sometimes called a quadrilateral too, because it has four “sides.” For school, the shape is the meaning that matters.
