    A push-up is a body exercise: you lie face down, keep your body straight, and push yourself up off the floor with your arms, then lower yourself again. People do them to train the chest, arms, and shoulders. In American English this is the usual name; in British English many people say press-up for the same exercise, though push-up is widely understood. You count them (ten push-ups, a set of push-ups). Teachers and gyms use it as a simple, no-equipment drill. The word can also be an adjective in other compounds (a push-up bra), but that is a different use: here it is the exercise.
