A purposeful person or act has a clear aim. You can see they are going somewhere, or doing the thing for a reason, not drifting. A purposeful walk is not a stroll. A purposeful silence can be quiet because someone is holding to a plan. It can describe people, looks, movements, and work. It is a slightly serious, often word: purposeful often sounds like a compliment — this person knows what they are doing. It is not the same as “on purpose.” “On purpose” only means you meant to do it, even if the act itself was small or naughty. A child can knock a cup over on purpose without looking purposeful at all. Though actually, some speakers blur the two, and you will hear that.
