A protozoan is a living thing made of only one cell, too small to see without a microscope. Amoebas and paramecia are the examples: they move, eat, and live as a single cell, not as a plant or animal with many cells. The old name means something like first animals, because early scientists thought they were the simplest animals. Though actually, no longer treat protozoa as one neat family — some are closer to other groups — but the word is still used, especially in class. The same word can also be an adjective: a protozoan infection. They are not bacteria (those are simpler cells) and they are not viruses (viruses are not cells at all).
