Protoplasm is an old science word for the colourless living stuff that fills the cells of plants and animals. In the 1800s, people thought of it as the basic living jelly of life. Today teachers more often say cytoplasm for the material around the nucleus, and they split that further. Though actually, protoplasm was meant to cover the whole living content of the cell, nucleus and all, so it is a little wider than cytoplasm. You will still meet it in some textbooks and older writing. It is not a word people use in ordinary talk.

組成From German Protoplasma, coined by the Czech physiologist Jan Evangelista Purkyně, from Ancient Greek πρῶτος (prôtos, first) + πλάσμα (plásma, something moulded). By surface analysis, proto- + -plasm. Late Latin protoplasma was also used for the first-created one (Adam), a different, older use of the same pieces.
