Propitiation is the act of making an angry person — or an angry god — feel friendly again, or the thing you offer in order to do that. Keep the noun in your head: it is the making-peace, not a command to go and do it. In church language it is a heavy word: the idea that a wrong is paid for so that God is no longer against you. Though actually, outside sermons and theology books you will barely meet it. When you do, it is not a casual sorry. It names the peace-offering itself, or the whole work of turning wrath aside. Everyday English prefers apology, gift, or making up.
