When something is propitious, the time or the setting looks good for what you want to do. Writers say a propitious moment, a propitious start, or propitious weather for a launch. You would not call a sandwich propitious, or a friendly person. The word is about conditions: they seem likely to bring a good result. It is rather formal and a little old. In a book or a speech you hear it; in a café people say lucky or a good time. Though actually lucky can mean pure chance. Propitious is a bit more careful: the setup itself looks kindly, as if the moment were on your side.
