Proofreading is the work of reading through something written or printed in order to correct mistakes. It is the activity; the person who does it is a . Writers do a little of this themselves, but a second pair of eyes is the usual idea — you are so used to your own sentences that your brain “fixes” them before you see the error. Though actually, proofreading is not the same as editing. Editing can change the ideas, the order, or the tone. Proofreading comes later and stays smaller: spelling, , a missing word, a broken number. In Taiwan offices people often just say 校對 for this step.
