Proofreading是指 is the work of reading through something written or printed把寫好或印好的東西從頭讀過一遍的工作,in order to correct mistakes目的是為了改正錯誤。It這 is the activity是那個動作本身;the person who does it做這件事的人 is a proofreader叫做proofreader(校對者)。Writers作者 do a little of this themselves自己多少也會做一點這件事,but a second pair of eyes但另一雙眼睛 is the usual idea才是常見的做法——you are so used to your own sentences因為你太熟悉自己寫的句子了 that your brain 'fixes' them以至於你的大腦會在你看到錯誤之前 before you see the error就先幫你「修好」它們。

Though actually不過實際上,proofreading校對 is not the same as editing跟editing(編輯)並不一樣。Editing編輯 can change the ideas, the order, or the tone可以改變想法、順序,或語氣。Proofreading校對 comes later and stays smaller則是在後面進行,範圍也比較小:spelling, punctuation, a missing word, a broken number像是拼字、標點、漏掉的字,或錯誤的數字。
In Taiwan offices people often just say 校對 for this step.
In Taiwan offices在台灣的辦公室裡 people often just say 校對人們通常就直接說「校對」 for this step來指這個步驟。
