A Primus is a small stove you can carry, that burns oil (the kind campers call paraffin or kerosene), used when you are camping and have no kitchen. You pump it, light it with care, and cook on the flame. The name began as a brand — a Swedish company called their stove Primus, from Latin for “first” — and in British English that brand name became the ordinary word for this kind of oil camping stove, often still written with a capital P. Though actually, it is not an electric stove and not the little gas-canister stove many hikers use now. Younger campers may just say camping stove; Primus sounds a little old-fashioned, like something from a hiking story. In Taiwan you are more likely to hear the type-name 汽化爐 than Primus as a common noun.
