Primal describes feelings or actions that feel ancient and animal, as if they come from a deep, early layer of us — fear, hunger, rage, the need to protect your child. A primal scream is not a polite cry; a primal fear is the kind that makes the body move before the mind has a sentence. It is stronger and more bodily than basic or first. Though actually, people stretch it: and films say primal for anything raw or intense, even when nothing ancient is going on. In careful talk, primal is about that old, animal layer, not merely “important” or “main” (that is closer to primary). You will hear it about emotion and instinct far more than about school, rank, or a first reason.
