A preconception is the belief itself — the thing already sitting in your mind before the facts arrive, and that may be wrong. It is the noun that matches preconceived. We talk about old preconceptions when a group of people all carry the same early picture: of a country, a job, a kind of person. Though actually, a preconception is not as hot as a prejudice. Prejudice often has dislike or unfair treatment inside it. A preconception can be milder, even polite, and still lead you the wrong way. You can challenge or set aside your preconceptions; those are common, slightly formal pairings. In class this is a useful word, because it lets you admit you arrived with a story without calling yourself a bad person.
