A careful examination of a dead body by a doctor, done to find out what made the person die. The same word is used when a vet examines a dead animal for the same reason.
驗屍
One way to hold this word: something is already over and cannot be changed, so people open it up and look inside to find out what went wrong. A body after a death, a project after a failure — in both cases the looking comes too late to help the thing itself, and is done so that the reason is known.
可以想成一個畫面：事情已經結束、而且改不了了，於是有人把它打開，看看裡面出了什麼問題。遺體是這樣，一個失敗的計畫也是這樣。檢查的時機一定在後面，救不回這一次，但至少能把原因弄清楚。這也是為什麼兩個意思都要用 on 帶出「被打開來看的那個東西」。
