    An autopsy is a careful examination of a dead body to find out why the person died. Special doctors do this for a hospital, a court, or the police, often after a sudden or death. It is a serious medical and legal word. You will hear it a lot on crime shows; in real life people use it quietly, because it is about someone’s body after death. Though actually, workplace English sometimes stretches it: “Let’s do an autopsy on this failed plan” means let’s look closely at why it died. That use is a bit dark and informal; the body meaning is the real one. The old Greek idea behind the word is “seeing with your own eyes,” not taking someone else’s word for what happened. There is also a verb, to autopsy, but the noun is what you will meet first.
