Portugal is a country in southwest Europe, on the Atlantic, with Spain along its only land border. It belongs to the European Union. The capital is Lisbon. About ten to eleven million people live there; some Atlantic islands belong to it as well. For a long time its living came from the sea and from wine — it is still famous for port wine, named after the city of Porto, and for cork. Newer factories make clothes and car parts. The south coast, the , is a well-known holiday stretch, especially for visitors from northern Europe. In British history you may hear that Portugal is Britain’s oldest ally: English books often mean a friendship that goes back many centuries. The name was borrowed from Portuguese Portugal, from Latin Portucale, from Portus Cale, an old name for the place that is now Vila Nova de Gaia. Portus is Latin for “harbour.” What Cale meant is not settled — it may be from a Celtic people, from Latin for “warm,” or from Greek; scholars do not agree, so it is honest to stop there. In English we say POR-chuh-gull.
