Think of the word a parent hands to a small child so the child has something to say. The thing itself is not pretty, but the word is soft, round and short, and it can be said at the dinner table, at the vet, or in a hospital . Every use of poo can be thought of as growing out of that one soft word: the stuff, the act of doing it, the verb for doing it, and even the tiny swear word people use when they want to keep their language gentle.
