A recorded show sitting on the Internet, waiting. Nobody has to be listening at any particular hour, because nothing is live: it was made, it was put up, and it stays there until someone presses play. One word covers both ends of that — the thing waiting, and the act of putting it there.

The source's etymology tree for podcast runs through Internet and through pod and iPod, the early pocket player these shows were made for. The common account is pod plus the -cast of broadcast; our copy of the tree is cut off before broadcast appears, so that half is not directly shown here.
