A plaice is a flat sea fish that people eat — brown on top with orange spots, white underneath, with both eyes on the same side of its head, so it lies on the sea floor. In Britain it is one of the standard fish-and-chip-shop fish, along with cod and haddock, and that is where a is most likely to meet the word: on a menu or a chip shop board. Outside Britain and northern Europe it is not a common word at all, and it is not a fish most people in Taiwan eat or name. The spelling and the plural both catch people out. It sounds exactly the same as 'place', and the plural is normally 'plaice' too — 'we caught three plaice' — which is how English usually treats fish it eats (two fish, ten salmon, three plaice). Like other fish names, it is uncountable when you mean the meat on your plate: 'I had plaice for dinner', with no 'a' and no 's'.
鰈魚、比目魚的一種(歐洲常見的可食用扁身海魚,英國炸魚薯條的常見魚種)
組成Came into English through Old French from a Late Latin word platessa, built on Greek platys meaning 'broad, flat' — the fish is named for its shape.
