Pitch-dark means completely dark — you cannot see a thing. It is almost the same as pitch-black. Though actually, pitch-black can also name a colour (hair, cloth, a cat), while pitch-dark is nearly always about light: a night, a room, a cave. Both come from the same picture: as dark as pitch, the black tar. Informal to neutral; very common in stories. You may also see it without the (pitch dark). It does not mean a little gloomy. It means no light at all.
