Pitch-black means completely black, with no light and no colour you can pick out — as black as pitch, the thick, sticky tar people once spread on roofs and ships. You can say a pitch-black night, a pitch-black room, or pitch-black hair. It is a strong everyday word, a little vivid, the kind you find in stories as well as in talk. People also say pitch-dark for the same idea when they mean darkness rather than colour. Though actually, pitch-black can describe a colour (hair, a cat, a wall), while pitch-dark is almost always about light. Pitch here is the tar, not throwing a ball, and not the high or low of a sound.
