Picture the machine at a building site: a heavy block is winched up high, held for a second, and then let go onto the top of a long post. Thud. The post goes down. Nothing about it is clever or quick — it is weight, falling straight, again and again, and the ground has no say in the matter. Hold on to that thud, because it is the whole word. Everything else English does with this phrase keeps the falling weight and throws away the building site.
