A pianoforte is a piano: the big keyboard instrument whose strings are hit by hammers. The long Italian name means, roughly, “soft-loud.” That was the point of the new instrument in the 1700s: unlike a harpsichord, it could play very quietly and very strongly, and everything in between, depending on the player’s touch. In everyday English almost nobody says pianoforte now; they say piano. You still meet the full word in older writing, in formal concert notes, and in the history of the instrument. It names the thing itself, not a special kind of piano different from the one in the living room.
