Philological means ‘to do with philology’: the careful study of words, old texts, and the way words and languages develop over time. A philological note might compare manuscripts, trace a word back through Latin or Greek, or work out what a line in an old poem first meant. It is a university word, not an everyday one. Philology sits next to , but the older flavour is historical and textual — old books, old forms, etymology — not only how people speak now.
