Pharyngitis is the doctor’s name for a sore, swollen pharynx — the tube at the back of your mouth. You may hurt when you swallow. At home people just say they have a sore throat. Doctors like this word because it names the part: that tissue is , whether a virus, bacteria, dry air, or too much shouting did it. Many cases come from a virus and ease with rest and drinks; they do not always want antibiotics. The word is formal and belongs in clinics, not in a text to a friend. Though actually, everyday “sore throat” is wider. Pain can come from the , or from the larynx (the voice box), and a patient will still call all of it a sore throat. Pharyngitis is not , and it is not automatically tonsillitis, even when those neighbours are angry at the same time. If your voice has gone, the larynx is more likely in the story than this word alone.
