    Petrograd is the name used from 1914 to 1924 for the Russian city we now call St Petersburg. When the First World War began, Petersburg sounded German, and Germany was the enemy, so the government gave the city a more Russian-sounding name. Petro- here is from the name Peter — the apostle the city was named for, and Peter the Great — and -grad is a Slavic word for city, so it means “Peter’s city.” Though actually, this petro- has nothing to do with petroleum or oil, even though the letters look the same. In 1924 they it Leningrad; later it became St Petersburg again. You will meet Petrograd in history books about the Russian Revolution.

組成From Russian Petrograd. Petro is from the name Peter (Greek Petros), the same Peter as in St Petersburg and Peter the Great. Grad is Slavic for “city.” The older Dutch/German-style name Sankt Petersburg was reshaped to sound Russian.
