Belgrade is the capital city of Serbia, in southeast Europe. It stands where the river Sava meets the , so for centuries it has been a fortress and a crossing, not a quiet back-town. The local name is Beograd; English took Belgrade through French. The old fortress had pale stone walls, and the name means something like 'white city' or 'white fortress' — that is the picture inside the word, not a tourist slogan stuck on later. For much of the twentieth century Belgrade was also the main city of a larger country, Yugoslavia. That country is gone; Belgrade is now the capital of Serbia alone. It is a lived-in capital: cafés, traffic, and a hill-fort looking over the rivers. English speakers sometimes mix it on the page with Belgium, because the opening letters match and both are European names — they are not related, and they are not near each other.
