Leningrad was the name of the Russian city we now call St. Petersburg, used while Russia was part of the Soviet Union. It was named after Lenin, the first leader of that state. The name lasted from the 1920s until 1991, when the city took back St. Petersburg. Older people who lived those years may still say Leningrad; maps and younger speakers say St. Petersburg. History books still say the Siege of Leningrad for the long wartime starving of the city. Though actually, the place has worn several names: St. Petersburg, then , then Leningrad, then St. Petersburg again. If you use Leningrad today, you are usually talking about the Soviet years, not the city as it is now. It is a place name, not a kind of by itself.
組成Borrowed from Russian Ленинград (Leningrad): Lenin + град (grad, “city”). Named in honour of Vladimir Lenin.
