A pedometer is a small tool that counts your steps and so tells you roughly how far you have walked. Older ones to a belt and used a little swinging weight; now a phone or a watch usually does the same job. People still say pedometer for the old , and sometimes for the step-counter in an app. It is a neutral, slightly technical word. Though actually it does not measure distance directly — it counts steps and guesses distance from how long your stride is, so it can be a little wrong if you run, shuffle, or push a .
