To pedestrianize a street is to change it so cars and trucks are no longer allowed, and people on foot come first. Councils pedestrianize old town centres, market streets, and the space in front of a station. After they pedestrianize it, you walk there; you do not drive through. It is a verb used by planners, city hall, and newspapers. American English likes -ize; British English often pedestrianise. You can also say 'make it a pedestrian street' or 'turn it into a walking street' if the long verb feels heavy. Though actually, pedestrian as an adjective can also mean 'dull, nothing special' ('a pedestrian speech'), but pedestrianize does not mean 'make something boring'. It only means 'make it for walkers'.
