Pedestrianization is when a city changes a street or a shopping area so that cars and trucks may not go there any more. After that, the place is for people walking — and often for bikes, seats, and shops that open onto the street. Cities do this to make the centre quieter, safer, and nicer to walk in. The verb is pedestrianize; this long noun is the change, or the project. It is a planning and newspaper word, a little formal. In British English you will also see pedestrianisation, with an s. People who love cars sometimes hate it. Shopkeepers argue both ways: some say more walkers means more business, some say 'How will customers arrive?' Though actually, the street is not always 100% without vehicles. Emergency cars, morning deliveries, or a bus on a shared path may still be allowed. The point is: it is no longer a normal road for through traffic.
