A pedagogue is a teacher — though actually, this is not the warm everyday word. Teacher is the normal, kind word. Pedagogue often means a teacher who is sure they know a lot, who likes rules, and who teaches in a stiff, strict way. In old Greece, a paidagōgos was the person who walked a child to school and watched over them: a “child-guide”. That old job-name came through Latin and French into English. Today, when someone calls a person a pedagogue, they may mean “this person teaches, but they talk down to you”. In careful writing about education it can still be more neutral, simply “a teacher”, but students should hear the slightly cold colour first. There is a rare verb “to pedagogue”; you will almost never need it.
