A pebble is a small stone that water has worn smooth. You find pebbles on beaches and in river beds; they feel nice in the hand because the sharp edges have gone. They are bigger than grains of sand but smaller than what most people would call a rock. Though actually nobody is strict about the size: a child may call any small stone a pebble. The everyday word is the noun. There is also a quieter verb: to pebble a path is to cover it with these small stones so it does not turn to mud; more rarely, to pebble someone is to throw pebbles at them.
鵝卵石
組成From Middle English pibel, from Old English papolstān — papol (origin unknown) + stān (stone). So it began as 'pebble-stone'; later people dropped the stone part. An Albanian word popël is sometimes compared, but that link is not sure enough to lean on.
