A peacekeeper is a soldier — or a group of soldiers — sent to a place where two sides have been fighting, so the fighting stops and does not start again. They often wear blue helmets or berets when they work for the United Nations. Their job is not mainly to win a war for one side. It is to stand between the two groups, watch the , protect ordinary people, and help a thin peace hold. Countries send peacekeepers to another country by agreement, not as an invading army — though actually the line can feel messy on the ground, and not everyone there welcomes them. Peacekeepers may carry weapons; the word sounds gentler than the work sometimes is. People also stretch the word to the person in a family who always steps in when others quarrel. The news meaning, the soldier, is the main one.
