Patriotism is the love of your country — the feeling itself, and the idea that you should care for it and, if needed, defend it. It is a noun. You feel patriotism; you are patriotic; a person who feels it is a patriot. The short line “having or expressing a great love of your country” is really the adjective’s job; this word names the love, not the person and not the describing-word.
often present it as a virtue, and many people live it quietly: looking after a place, paying in, turning up. Though actually, adults do not agree where patriotism ends and something harsher begins. Care for home is one thing; telling other countries, or people in your own country, that they do not count is another. Writers sometimes keep patriotism (love of your country) apart from nationalism (putting your country above everyone else), but in real talk the two get mixed, and both words can be used as weapons. The tidy split is tidier than the street.
