Particulates are the tiny bits of dust and dirt that float in the air and can hurt your lungs. The word is almost always plural. People use it especially for the harmful stuff that comes out of car engines, factories, and burning fuel — the haze over a busy road. Scientists also say particulate matter, often to PM; the very small bits are PM2.5. Smoke, dust, and cover some of the same ground in everyday talk, but particulates is the more technical word for those bits as pollution. One bit is a particle; the air-pollution sense prefers particulates.
