Parsimony is the noun: the habit or quality of being extremely unwilling to spend money. A person of great parsimony keeps a tight hold on every coin. It is a formal, slightly old-fashioned word. Everyday English is more likely to say stinginess, or, more kindly, extreme thrift. In tone it can be cold; it does not by itself praise the person, and it often hints that the holding-back has gone too far. Though actually, in science and philosophy you will meet a second, very common use: the principle of parsimony. When two explanations both work, prefer the simpler one. That is the same idea as “do not spend more than you need,” but here the spending is of ideas, extra steps, extra causes. Students who only learn the money sense are surprised when a biology paper talks about parsimony and nobody is shopping. It is the same word in a different jacket.
