Papist is an unkind name for a Roman Catholic — a Christian who belongs to the Church that has the Pope in Rome as its head. It was used especially by Protestants, above all in older Britain and Ireland, to mark Catholics as “the Pope’s people” and to push them away. You will still meet it in history books, old sermons, and angry talk, but it is not a calm dictionary label and you should not use it for a classmate or a neighbour. The ordinary, polite words are Catholic and Roman Catholic. Though actually, a few Catholics have picked the word up themselves, with a dry smile, the way people sometimes wear an insult on purpose; that still does not make it a safe word in a student’s mouth. It feels old-fashioned and hostile, not technical.
